Rickie Lambert has described his stunning first half goal against Luton Town as the best strike of his footballing career.

The Rovers forward lashed home an unstoppable 35-yard volley at Kenilworth Road as Paul Trollope's side continued their impressive start to the 2007/08 season.

Rickie then went on to score what proved to be the winner in the second half, nodding home from close range with just eight minutes of the match remaining.

"The first goal was definitely the best goal I've scored," Rickie told bristolrovers.co.uk, "It might not be the most important because I've scored some others in big matches, we'll have to wait and see, but as a strike it's definitely the best I've scored.

"As soon as the ball was up in the air I knew I was going to volley it. I could hear people around me screaming to bring it down and pass it but I only had one thing on my mind and thankfully I hit it perfectly.

"Obviously they went on to equalise, but we kept pressing, especially in the second half. We were creating lots of chances but none of them were going in and I was beginning to think it wasn't going to be our day.

"But luckily one of them eventually came to me and I managed to get my head to it and knock it in and it was enough to give us the three points."

The double strike was even more sweet for Rickie after being rotated to the substitutes bench against Nottingham Forest seven days earlier.

"I was a bit disappointed to be left out against Forest like any striker would be, but I knew I would get another chance, and I'm glad it came against Luton," he said.

"Richard and Andy are both quality strikers, and when you've got three players for two positions you're not going to be able to play every week. I've not really had rotation before, I've always been the main striker, but I'm perfectly ok with player alongside either."

Confidence in the Rovers camp remains high, and Rickie says the players are aiming high this season.

"I think everyone outside of Bristol thought Luton were going to win the game, but everyone inside Bristol knows what we're capable of and what we're doing," he said.

"We knew we could go to Luton and win, and we have a real confidence and belief in ourselves going into every match.

"We've carried on what we started last season, and everything we were showing then we're showing this season. It's about keeping it going and keeping the belief and surprising other people with what we can do.

"We haven't lost in the league now since Wrexham back in March, which is an unbelievable run.

"These are good times for Bristol Rovers fans, and we'll be looking to keep the run going on Friday in our next game against Leeds. They won again yesterday so hopefully we can be the first ones to beat them this season."
