TROLLS PLEASED TO REACH SAFETY
Paul Trollope was pleased to see Rovers secure their League One status against Gillingham this afternoon.
The Pirates were held to a 1-1 draw by the Gills, a result which mathematically seals the club's position in the division.
"We looked to win the game as we do every game," Paul told bristolrovers.co.uk, "We went for it from the beginning and after 25 minutes or so we were looking good.
"Unfortunately though, similarly to what has happened in a lot of home games this season, we couldn't manage to score when we were on top.
"We had quite a few chances, and good chances too, but then after that spell we went through a period of about ten minutes when it looked like we couldn't cope with their set-pieces. And one bit of poor defending from one of their breaks cost us the goal.
"We wanted to start the game well and we did, but it is important that during periods like that you take advantage. Sometimes bad luck is involved in not scoring, but others times it's about not having quality under pressure.
"In the second half the players showed great spirit to get back into it, and they played with a good intensity about them. I thought we were worthy of at least a point in the end, but naturally we wanted the three points not just the one.
"We've had a good away record this season, but our home record is one of a team in the lower half of the division and that's why we are where we are. We've had too many draws and we've not taken our chances, and it's well documented where our problems lie.
"On the plus side today we're mathematically safe which is pleasing, and particularly after the run of games we went through without a win reaching this point was always going to be a milestone for us.
"We've made ourselves safe, albeit not in spectacular fashion, and now we can look forward to next season after hopefully finishing off this season with a few more decent results.
"Anytime you go up a division you never know how you're going to do until you are there playing week in week out. You can guess, but you don't know until you're there.
"We've been up and down and had good spells and bad spells, but most importantly now, we know where we need to improve in order to really progress. It's fairly obvious in what area that is, and when we make those improvements we believe we'll be heading in the right direction for next season."
