Paul Trollope hopes the signings of Jeff Hughes and Darryl Duffy will help fix Rovers' goal scoring problems.

The first team coach was at a Memorial Stadium press conference yesterday afternoon to unveil his new duo - two of six fresh faces introduced to the media ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

Both players cost the club six-figure sums, and Paul hopes their arrivals will send out a message to other clubs in League One as well as supporters.

"After a bit of a frustrating summer, it's good to be back and we're very proud to have announced these signings," Paul told bristolrovers.co.uk.

"They both cost the club six-figures, and they were both right at the top of our list from last season.

"We've had fantastic backing from the chairman and the board to bring them in, and we hope they will help us progress this season, which is what we want to do.

"Before we got promoted we signed players we thought could play in League One, and now we're signing players we believe are capable of playing in the Championship.

"It's well documented that last season there was a lack of goals, and we know that needed to be addressed in the summer. We feel we create enough chances, but we need to be better in front of goal.

"These two players will add to us in that department, and we're delighted to have them here."

As well as the club spending big money in the transfer market, Paul has also been impressed by the financial commitment being put into improving the Memorial Stadium pitch.

"It's a huge factor for us," he said, "Sometimes after games people think we use it as an excuse, but it's a crucial factor in the way we play.

"It's the same for both teams, but when away sides come here and put five across midfield we need to move the ball about quickly, and we haven't been able to do that.

"But the money is being spent on the pitch to give us what we believe will be a much better surface, and we feel that if we take care of that then it will be a big advantage for us over the course of the season."

Paul hopes that the new signings and the investment being ploughed into 2008/09 will help persuade fans who've yet to purchase a season ticket to snap one up.

"We're pleased with the progress we've made, but we want more," he said, "We've had the backing of the board with their financial outlay, and now we need the supporters to turn up as well.

"Buying season tickets and having a good base is an integral part of taking a club forward, and we hope to see as many fans as possible getting behind us for the season ahead."
